Driver assist systems may cause crashes in some situations

A paper released by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety warned that the electronic assist systems installed in some high-end vehicles in West Virginia and around the country can fail in many situations. The IIHS tested driver assist systems designed by Mercedes, Volvo, BMW and Tesla. With automatic braking on and adaptive cruise control off, the Model S and the Model 3, both Tesla vehicles, hit a stationary balloon in testing on a track, suggesting that they would not have been able to avoid a real collision under similar circumstances.

The Teslas avoided the balloon when adaptive cruise control was on. Adaptive cruise control is a feature that keeps the vehicle a specified distance away from the vehicle in front of it. The vehicles tested, including the BMW 5-Series, the Mercedes E-Class, the Volvo S-90 and the Teslas, are among the best in their class. They have previously earned superior ratings from the IIHS.

-Several of the dangerous scenarios discovered by the IIHS testing are discussed in the vehicle owner's manuals, but drivers often do not read them in close detail. Some of the lane centering systems in the vehicles failed, especially on hills and curves. The Volvo S-90, Tesla Model S and BMW 5-Series regularly steered across or toward the center line.

Despite these safety features, motorists still need to pay attention to their surroundings. A person who is injured in a car accident caused by the negligence of another driver might find it advisable to have the help of an attorney when attempting to obtain compensation for medical bills and other losses.
