Drunk driving deaths

Drivers in West Virginia should be aware that nearly one-third of all traffic-related deaths are the result of drunk driving. People who are under the age of 24 are at the most risk of being killed as are motorcyclists and individuals who have been previously convicted of driving under the influence.

Victims of drunk drivers can sustain any number of different types of injuries that can result in death. They can include severe cuts that cause a massive loss of blood and significant head trauma.

Hypovolemic shock can be caused by the loss of too much bodily fluid, such as blood, and prevents the heart from pumping as it should. A person can sustain head trauma by knocking his or her head against the steering wheel or other hard surfaces in the vehicle or from being struck by flying debris.

Individuals who consume alcohol will continue to have alcohol in their blood until it is processed by their livers. It will take almost one hour for approximately 30 milliliters of consumed alcohol to be processed by a healthy liver. For people with livers that are not functioning well, the process can be significantly longer.

A blood alcohol concentration test can be used to determine the level of alcohol in a person's blood. For the majority of the United States, driving with a BAC level of 0.08 is illegal. Although it may not seem significant, this amount of alcohol in the blood is able to affect how quickly an individual can react behind the wheel.

A personal injury attorney may assist people who have been injured in a car accident with obtaining the financial compensation to which they may be legally entitled. Lawsuits may be filed against drivers whose drunken driving behavior contributed to the accident that caused the victim's significant injuries.
