How to drive safely in foggy conditions

As one of our West Virginia readers, we know that you're familiar with the many weather conditions that often come into play throughout the state.

For example, if you find yourself driving through the mountains, it's not uncommon to come face to face with thick fog.

Not only can this reduce visibility, but it can also make it more difficult for others to see your vehicle. Subsequently, there is a greater chance of being part of a motor vehicle accident.

Since it's so difficult to drive safely in foggy conditions, you need to change your approach. Here are a few safety tips that are sure to help:

  • Slow down. It's never a good idea to drive the speed limit when there is low visibility. Even if it stops you from reaching your destination in time, you need to slow your speed and wait for conditions to improve.
  • Use your headlights, but not your high beams. Your headlights can be your best friend in foggy conditions. However, your high beams can be your worst enemy, as the reflection will actually make it more difficult to see.
  • Keep close tabs on other drivers. Even if you slow down in heavy fog, it doesn't mean other drivers will do the same. By paying attention to other drivers, you may be able to save yourself from a serious accident.

In a perfect world, you'd never face inclement weather when behind the wheel of your vehicle. However, if you live in West Virginia, you know that fog, rain, and snow can move in at any time.

If you're part of an accident in foggy conditions, move your car to safety. Make sure you're fully off the road, as you don't want to be part of a follow-up accident.

Once you call 911 and receive treatment for your injuries, you can look back at the accident to better understand what went wrong. If another person was at fault, you'll want to learn more about your legal rights and if you can seek compensation.
