Concussion and brain injury can be different for women

Women in West Virginia may be interested in information about how brain injuries affect them differently than men. A professor of neurosurgery at UCLA says that women are more likely to experience concussions and can have symptoms that last longer. Most research into concussions has been focused on men, so the reasons that women experience concussions differently are unclear.

Scientific research has discovered that male and female brains are different in various ways. Hormones could play a part in the different concussion experiences of men and women, and differences in the upper body, especially the neck, could also make a difference. The UCLA professor says that women are also more likely to talk about concussion symptoms such as social isolation, depression or headache.

Most people recover from a concussion in one or two weeks. However, many women experience what is called post-concussive syndrome. This involves prolonged symptoms after a concussive injury.

Among athletes in sports including baseball, softball, basketball and soccer, women have a higher rate of concussions than men. However, the risk of concussion while playing these sports is low compared to the risk of concussion associated with some other activities.

Athletes in some sports use head protection to prevent or reduce the effects of head injuries. However, brain injuries can occur in automobile accidents or at other times when no head protection is being worn. Someone who suffers a brain injury could be faced with many legal issues. If necessary, a lawyer could help a victim file a claim for damages.
