Data shows accident avoidance systems help prevent car crashes

West Virginia drivers may be interested to learn that lane departure warnings and blind spot alerts can prevent car accidents, according to data from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety. However, drivers and vehicle manufacturers in the U.S. have been slow to adopt these safety alert systems.

The study found that collision avoidance systems reduce the number of car accidents and injury-related crashes. For example, researchers found that sideswipe accidents, head-on collisions and single-vehicle accidents in 2015 were 11 percent less likely in vehicles that were equipped with lane departure warning systems and blind spot alerts.

Based on the data, the IIHS estimates that if all vehicles in 2015 had collision avoidance technology equipped, approximately 55,000 injuries caused by car accidents could have been prevented. This is because the warning systems alert the driver to an impending accident and give them a chance to make corrections that could completely avoid causing a crash. However, drivers who have collision avoidance technology often turn off their warning systems. Analysts say that beeping warning systems are often annoying to drivers.

Even if drivers have collision avoidance systems equipped in their vehicles, they could still be held liable for any accidents that they cause. For example, if a person suffers an injury in a car crash, that injury could prevent the injured person from working, going to school or living his or her life as before. A personal injury attorney may assist a victim by negotiating with the necessary insurance agencies. A successful claim could cover the victim's damages.
