Preventing workplace eye injuries

West Virginia residents may not know that every day an estimated 2,000 workers across the nation suffer an eye injury while on the job. About 90 percent of all of these accidents could potentially be prevented if employees wore appropriate eye protection gear.

While about 40 percent of all eye injuries occur in the construction, mining and manufacturing industries, office workers who are required to spend long time periods on their computer can also experience problems with their eyes and vision. Staring at a screen for long periods of time can lead to headaches, eye strain and fatigue. Dry eyes can also become a problem as digital displays can reduced a worker's blink rate.

To help prevent workplace eye injuries, the American Academy of Ophthalmology has provided tips. They include wearing protective eye wear that is appropriate for the type of work an employee is required to do. If an employee is required to work on a computer all day, the monitor should be placed about 25 inches away from the employee's face. Text can be enlarged on the computer screen as needed. To help alleviate eyestrain, an employee can take a quick break every 20 minutes. Workers should focus on an object that is 20 feet away for about 20 seconds. This allows the eyes to relax and resume their normal blinking pattern.

No matter how severe a work injury is, an employee's ability to complete tasks could be affected. People who find themselves in this position may want to meet with an attorney in order to see whether workers' compensation benefits might be available and if so, how to go about applying for them.
