Preventing cargo tank truck rollover accidents

The concerns relating to cargo tank trucks not only lies with the hazardous material that they might be transporting, but also with the higher likelihood that these trucks could rollover if proper care is not taken. Therefore, in order to increase safety, prevent rollover crashes and reduce the chances of hazardous materials spilling on the roadways, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration, or FMCSA, in association with the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration, created specific training materials for cargo tank truck drivers.

According to the FMCSA, roughly 78 percent of rollover truck accidents occur because of driver error. Because of that, much focus is placed on ensuring that drivers are properly trained so that they can avoid common causes of driver error, such as intoxication, distractions and fatigue.

In order to reduce cargo tank truck rollovers, the FMCSA has focused on four areas: vehicle design and performance, load effects, highway factors and driver factors. This means that vehicles should be designed with safety in mind and properly maintained, trucks should be loaded properly, drivers should considered road conditions and drivers should always uphold their duty to drive safely while behind the wheel.

It is important that truck drivers avoid sudden movements that could lead to rollovers, learn how to control the truck's load during a turn and straight roadway, identify high risk areas on the roadways, maintain alertness and attention behind the wheel and control the speed of the truck. These and other safety measures could help prevent and reduce rollover incidents.

While measures have been taken to educate and train truck drivers to avoid rollover accidents, these types of accidents can still occur. It is important that any accident victims who are involved in a collision with cargo tank trucks or who are affected by a rollover accident take necessary steps following a truck accident to understand the cause. An investigation could reveal cause and liability, helping victims seek compensation from the responsible party.
