West Virginia taking steps to improve work zone safety

During the warmer months, residents in West Virginia may notice an increase in road construction sites. While it is easier for construction employees to work outdoors at this time of year, summer also brings an increase in motorists on the roadways. Because of this, motorists and construction workers should understand the risks associated with work zones and work zone accidents.

In order to raise awareness of safety hazards around construction zones, state authorities launched a new campaign for work zone safety. The Division of Highways' new "Just Slow Down" campaign seeks to call drivers' attention to safety with a simple message.

The DOH program uses a slogan similar in some ways to "Click it or Ticket" and other safety programs, but "Just Slow Down" specifically targets work zones. Launched in collaboration with West Virginia State Police, the program will also increase police enforcement in work zones. Drivers failing to follow the rules and posted speed limits will face fines up to $200 and possibly 20 days in jail.

New penalties for careless drivers could help encourage better driving safety, which would be better for drivers and construction workers alike.

While this program could help increase the safety in construction work zones, unfortunately, accidents still occur. If a construction worker, driver or passenger is harmed in a work zone accident, a victim may be able to recover for the serious injuries he or she sustained.

A personal injury claim could provide victims with compensation for expenses such as medical bills, lost wages and damages. Depending upon the exact circumstances, workers' compensation benefits or other forms of compensation may be available, as well. To learn more about the rights and options available to accident victims, those harmed should seek legal guidance about civil actions available and steps he or she could take to protect their legal rights and interests.
