21-vehicle accident occurs near West Virginia-Maryland state line

It is an unfortunate fact that automobile accidents occur every day on roadways in West Virginia and other states across the nation. While some accidents are based on negligence, driver error, recklessness or even weather conditions, others are caused by a multitude of factors. When this occurs, it is often the case that several motorists are involved in the collision, leading to numerous victims sustaining injuries and damages.

Emergency crews were recently dispatched to a multi-vehicle collision near the West Virginia-Maryland state border line. According to preliminary reports, the 21-vehicle accident occurred around 4:15 p.m. on Interstate 81 in the southbound lanes. Authorities reported that the crash involved 15 passenger vehicles, one RV and five tractor-trailers.

Once the victims of the accident were assessed, 15 were transported to the hospital for medical treatment for the non-life threatening injuries they sustained. Additionally, four victims refused medical treatment at the accident site and one victim was listed in critical condition.

After initial investigation, state troopers have suggested that multiple driver errors were the cause of the massive car crash. Authorities believe that driver errors, rainy weather and road conditions all contributed to the multi-vehicle crash. Once a thorough investigation is complete, authorities should be able to determine what drivers contributed to the crash and which did not.

Even if an accident victim is determined to be partially at fault, this does not automatically mean they are unable to file a cause of action for the losses and damages arising from the incident. If it is determined that compensation should be awarded for the victims, the monetary award will be decreased based on the percentage of the accident the victim driver caused.

A multi-vehicle accident can be a complex situation, leaving victims very confused while they deal with the aftermath of the collision. It is important that victims and their loved ones understand their options and what remedies are available to them. This could help ensure the victim takes timely action and protects his or her rights.
