How do you increase motorcycle safety?

It is not rare to see motorcyclists on West Virginia roads when the weather is nice, and as the weather continues to warm up, motorists should expect to see an increase of motorcyclists on the roadways. While most drivers have shared the road with a motorcycle, it is important that motorists understand safe driver habits and ways they could help prevent motorcycle accidents.

How do you increase motorcycle safety? There are ways both motorcyclists and automobile drivers could help increase the safety of motorcyclists. The most obvious and important way is by following the rules of the road and driving safely.

What are some tips for drivers? A driver should always allow a motorcyclist to have the full width of a lane. They should never share a lane with a motorcycle. Next, they should conduct regular mirror and blind spot checks. This is especially important if the driver has already spotted a motorcyclist near them. It is important that a driver is aware of their presence.

It is also important that motorists use signals to alert a lane change or a turn. With regards to turn signals, drivers should also be aware that a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle does not always mean they are changing lanes or turning. These signals do not self-cancel, and a rider could forget to turn them off. Lastly, motorists should always allow for a safe distance between their vehicle and a motorcycle. This will ensure that the motorcyclist can safely maneuver and stop without being struck from behind.

What are some tips for motorcyclists? Motorcyclists can increase their safety by driving safely, following the rules of the road and using turn signals appropriately. Protective gear is also important. If an accident were to occur, a helmet and protective clothing could help them avoid serious injuries. Lastly, motorcyclists should make sure they are visible. This means wearing light or brightly colored clothing and not traveling in the blind spots of other motorists.

These safety tips could help to reduce the chances of a motorcycle accident, but the truth is that accidents do happen. If a negligent driver causes a motorcycle crash, they could be liable for the injuries, deaths and damages arising out of the incident. Those injured or impacted by the incident should understand their rights and remedies.
