Oklahoma company cited for fatal work accident in West Virginia

It is not uncommon for minor incidents to occur in the workplace, especially in industries that carryout more dangerous work. Employees are often aware of the risks and dangers present in their occupation and employers often diligently safeguard their employees by providing proper training and safety equipment to prevent and reduce accidents. Unfortunately, though, this is not always the case. When a fatal work accident occurs, it is crucial that the cause and liability is understood so future occurrences can be avoided.

Following a fatal workplace accident that resulted in three deaths in West Virginia earlier this year, federal safety regulators cited an Oklahoma communication tower company for the incident. S&S Communication Specialists Inc. was cited by the Occupational Safety and Heath Administration for two serious safety violations that each carries a fine for $7,000.

The incident occurred when employees were working on a tower and it collapsed, killing two and injuring two others. In addition, one volunteer firefighter was killed while one was injured when they responded to the incident. The company was cited for not using temporary braces or supports. They were also cited for allowing employees to tie off to bracings that were not capable of supporting at least 5,000 pounds.

When a fatal workplace accident like this occurs, loved ones can be left in a very devastating and challenging situation. They could seek benefits through the workers' compensation system in order to offset the financial burdens caused by the incident. Such compensation could help cover medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and other damages.

Although some occupations are inherently dangerous, when a company or employer fails to provide adequate safety in the work environment, serious accident can occur. This could greatly affect the employees and their loved ones, and could result in permanent disabilities or even death. Those affected should understand their legal remedies applicable to their situation so they can take appropriate actions.
