Maintenance man suffers fatal fall through church gym ceiling

Even what a position is not inherently dangerous, workers should always be aware of the risks that could preset themselves in their line of work. Furthermore, employers should note these potential dangers so they help guard against work injury. Proper training and safety gear can reduce these risks, but they do not always prevent a fatal work accident from occurring.

A Parkersburg man was recently pronounced dead following a workplace accident. West Virginia authorities were called to the church gymnasium where the man had been working. Preliminary reports indicated that the 79-year-old man was performing maintenance on the ceiling of the gymnasium when he fell. While he was changing the filter to the heating and cooling system, the man fell through a portion of the drywall and descended 20 feet to the floor below.

When emergency crews arrived at the scene, the man was pronounced dead. It was reported that the man was part of the property team at the church; the church made no statements immediately following the accident. Investigation of the work accident continues and no citations have been made regarding the safety of the work environment or liability for the accident.

A fatal work accident could leave loved ones with numerous financial hardships. The family of the deceased can file for workers' compensation in many instances. This benefit can provide them with compensation to cover funeral costs, lost wages and loss of companionship.

A fatal work accident is an unfortunate event and is almost always unexpected. Employers can seek to investigate the cause in order to avoid future similar instances. Those affected by the accident can benefit from understanding their legal remedies following the incident. Filing for workers' compensation can help alleviate the financial hardships of being injured on the job or losing a family member to a workplace injury accident.
