West Virginia honors 22 workers who died in work accidents

When a disastrous event takes place in the work environment, it is important that employers, employees, loved ones, and the community understand how they can take steps to avoid future occurrences. Having awareness of the risks and dangers that some occupations possess or could encounter is crucial to avoiding serious or fatal work injuries. Following a workplace accident, proper investigation not only determines cause but also could reduce future incidents by increasing awareness, training, and safety features.

Following a fatal workplace accident that took place in West Virginia in 2013, The West Virginia AFL-CIO planned a Workers Memorial Day Service, which will occur next week in Benwood. This is not the only time this organization has planned and hosted this event. This year makes it the 26th annual Workers Memorial event.

The event will honor the 22 workers that died in workplace incidents in 2013 in the state of West Virginia. In addition to honoring those lost in workplace accident, the event also weeks to provide awareness and further their efforts to improve work conditions and enact new and better safety and health legislations of workers.

When an employee is injured or killed on-the-job, the worker or their loved ones could apply for workers' compensation. This benefit could help the injured worker recover or help cover funeral costs. Furthermore, the monetary award could compensate them for lost wages, damages and pain and suffering.

A workplace accident does not only impact the affected worker and their loved ones but also influences the entire workplace as well as the industry and the community. Tragic events in the workplace should be adequately investigated so proper steps are taken to avoid future incidents. Moreover, investigation could help love ones file claims for compensation.
