Contractor fatally injured at work

When a workplace accident occurs, it is crucial that the incident is investigated. This not only determines the cause of the incident but it also assists with the workers' compensation benefit that the injured employee seeks after the accident. Additionally, understanding the events surrounding the incident will help change the operation and regulations in the work environment. This could help formulate new safety feature and reduce the chances of a similar accident occurring at the workplace.

A fatality occurred at a power station in Haywood. The workplace accident happened at around 8:50 a.m. when a contractor employed by an insulating company was working at the power station. The contractor was removing insulation in order to prepare for an upcoming maintenance outage, and while he was working, he fell into a duct work. The emergency crews that responded to the work incident transported the man to the hospital. The man did not survive his serious injuries.

The Occupational Safety and Health administration conducted the investigation and report of this incident. At this time, OSHA confirms that the fatality at the power station was an accident. It was stated that safety measures were in place and were installed in order to prevent direct contact with the duct. Preliminary investigation has not made it clear as to how and why the man fell. A worker injured or killed on-the-job can receive worker's compensation benefits. In the case of a work fatality, the loved ones of the killed worker could receive the benefit in order to assist them with medical bills, funeral costs and lost wages.

Health and safety are always a concern in work environments, especially when the job could be risky. Implementing safety guidelines can help reduce the chances of a work accident but it cannot eliminate all on-the-job injuries and accident.
