West Virginia among most hazardous states to work

The good news first-since the Occupational Health and Safety Act was passed in 1970, more than 553,000 workers' lives have been saved. Over time, OSHA enforcement has also become stronger. The bad news however, is that 4,836 workers were killed while working in 2015 and the fatality rate remained the same as 2014-3.4 per 100,000 workers. In addition to this, between 50 and 60,000 workers died due to occupational diseases.

This leads to an astonishing fact-in this day and age, 150 workers die daily due to unsafe working conditions. Even these figures could be higher in reality, as the number of workplace injuries accidents and illnesses are grossly underreported. West Virginia is one of the most dangerous states to work, according to the study published by the AFL-CIO.

Older works and immigrants are at higher risk of getting injured on the job-35 percent of all fatalities were over the age of 55 and the number of immigrants killed on the job was the highest it has been since 2007. The risk of dying on the job increases with age-workers over the age of 65 are 2.5 times more likely to die in a workplace accident. Safety and health has improved in the mining and extraction business, but the transportation, agriculture and construction businesses remain dangerous, with the highest number of workers dying in 2015 in these sectors.

Even though we have come a long way since 1970, the sad reality is that workplace accidents and fatalities and work injures and illnesses arising from them are still commonplace in many workplaces. It is an employer's right to have a safe working environment free from hazardous and unsafe material.
