Large trucks involved in greater numbers of fatal accidents

Data from the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration indicates that there was a significant rise in the number of fatal truck accidents per 100 million miles driven as well as the number of large trucks involved in them. The agency's statistics for 2015 indicate that of the 415,000 accidents involving large trucks that were reported to police that year, many of which took place in West Virginia, 1 percent were deadly.

Per the report, of the 3,598 fatal accidents, 4,050 large trucks were involved. This represents an 8 percent increase over 2014. There was also an 8 percent increase in the number of crashes per 100 million miles traveled by large trucks, with the rate going from 1.34 percent to 1.45 percent.

Most fatal accidents involved drivers between the ages of 26 and 65. Just 5 percent of truck drivers in deadly accidents were 25 years or younger. Another 5 percent of drivers in fatal crashes were over the age of 65. In 2015, there were 667 truck occupant fatalities, which was a 2 percent increase over the previous year.

Occupants of other vehicles who are involved in semi-truck accidents often suffer catastrophic injuries due to the overwhelming weight and size of the big rigs. In many cases they need to undergo expensive medical treatments, during which they might be losing income due to their inability to return to work. If it can be determined that the accident was caused by a truck driver who was speeding, distracted, or negligent in some other fashion, an attorney could assist in filing a lawsuit that would seek compensation for those losses.
