How head injuries may be impacted by the brain's membrane

When a West Virginia resident becomes involved in an automobile accident, the membranes that surround the brain help to reduce the forces, potentially protecting against a potential brain injury. While there have been many studies that have looked at how the membranes affect the severity of a resulting brain injury, the exact mechanisms are still not known.

Researchers from Washington University in Saint Louis set out to determine just how protective the membranes surrounding the brain actually are. They used magnetic resonance elastography to analyze the affect of a vibration on the brains of six volunteers. They used a gelatin brain model, which was not cushioned by any membranes, as a comparison. A vibrating pillow was then introduced to both the volunteers and the gelatin model.

The numbers showed that the membranes reduced the effect of the vibrations by about 90 percent when compared with the gelatin model. The next step for the study was to develop a more streamlined MRI system so that more subjects could be studied. This way, certain factors and variables could be identified, such as gender and age. The goal is to ultimately determine who may be more susceptible for suffering traumatic brain injuries.

A head injury caused by a serious car crash or other accident can have an impact on the victim's ability to live a normal life. A personal injury attorney may help the injured person file a lawsuit against the driver who was responsible for causing the crash. In some cases, the attorney may negotiate with the other party's insurance company to seek compensation for medical bills directly associated with the accident, future medical costs if the client will need rehabilitation or future care and compensation for lost income if the client is unable to return to work for a lengthy period.
