Mining safely in cold weather

Citing the 1906 explosion at the Monongah mine, the U.S. Department of Labor and the Mine Safety and Health Administration want to remind workers of the dangers of coal mining in the winter.

The accident at Monongah killed 362 people and although it was more than 100 years ago, some of the dangers that led to the Monongah explosion are still problems. During the cold weather months, miners and mining companies must take extra care to prevent explosions and other accidents.

The Mine Safety and Health Administration recommends the following tips for underground mining in the winter:

  • Be aware that methane gas may collect underground more easily in cold weather.
  • Make sure the mine is correctly ventilated for the weather conditions.
  • Use adequate rock dust.

These safety precautions can help prevent coal mine explosions.

When accidents happen on the job

Unfortunately, it's not possible to prevent every coal mining accident. Even with safety precautions, mistakes and unforeseen circumstances occur in this dangerous industry.

If you are injured in an explosion, mine collapse, equipment failure or other type of mining accident, you can get financial help. Workers' compensation will cover your medical bills and part of your lost wages. Make sure you report your injury as soon as possible and get the workers' compensation process started.

In some cases, injured miners can also collect financial damages from negligent parties such as property owners, contractors and equipment manufacturers. To find out whether you have this option, discuss your accident with a lawyer. These consultations are always free.
