Distracted driving is more than texting and driving

Nowadays, most residents in West Virginia own a smart phone or smart device. Unfortunately, many motorists cannot drive long without looking at their phone. This behavior is not only risky but also deadly.

Distracted driving is a major concern among drivers across the nation, and smart phones are a major source of distraction. These devices take a driver's eyes, hands and mind away from the primary task of driving. Previously, cellphones generated a major concern for texting and driving; however, the world of distracted driving caused by cellphones has vastly expanded.

Drivers are not only tempted to text but also to check their emails, use Snapchat, check FaceBook, go on Twitter, Instagram and YouTube and now play video games like Pokemon Go. Using any of these applications while driving could cause a car accident.

According to recent surveys, 70 percent of teens say they use these listed apps while driving. And most of these teens claimed that driving under the influence of alcohol is more dangerous than distracted driving.

Based on recent statistics, eight people are killed and more than 1,000 are injured every day due to distracted driving. These numbers suggest the dangerousness and risks associated with this activity, causing motorists and passengers to suffer serious injuries and even death.

If a distracted driver caused a car crash, an injured victim could hold a negligent driver accountable for any damages suffered. A personal injury claim could help an injured victim recover compensation to cover medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other damages.
