How common are motorcycle accidents in the U.S.?

Although summer has come and gone, the warm weather has not disappeared with the appearance of fall. This means that motorists will be able to keep their windows down or even enjoy a ride on a motorcycle. Therefore, motorists in West Virginia and other states across the U.S. should always prepare to share the road with motorcyclists. Failure to do so could mean colliding with a biker and causing a serious motorcycle crash.

How common are motorcycle accidents in the U.S.? Based on recent statistics by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 4,957 motorcyclists were killed in motor vehicle collisions. This rate was a seven percent increase from those recorded in 2011. Additionally, there were 93,000 motorcycles injured during 2012, which was a 15 percent increase from 2011.

During 2012, there were 2,317 recorded two-vehicle fatal crashes involving motorcycles and another type of vehicle. Of these, 41 percent involved another vehicle turning left while the motorcyclist was traveling straight or passing or overtaking another vehicle. In 23 percent of these crashes, both vehicles were traveling straight.

Motorcycle crashes could occur for various reasons. If a driver was distracted, negligent or even intoxicated, there is greater chance of that driver not seeing a motorcyclist in time. Whether it is due to a motorist's failure to yield, speeding or negligence, if another driver is at fault, that driver could be held liable for any injuries, deaths or damages arising from a motorcycle accident. A personal injury claim or wrongful death suit could help an accident victim or family member collect necessary compensation to cover any expenses incurred.
