The benefits of longer and more intense rehab after a TBI

As a previous post noted, the recovery process for a brain injury can be lengthy, intensive, and very challenging for a victim. While a severe traumatic brain injury or TBI could leave an accident victim in West Virginia or elsewhere with a lengthy road towards recovery, some treatment plans may prove more effective than others. Therefore, TBI victims should consider all of their rehabilitation options, even if it is determined that they are suffering permanent damage.

According to a recent medical study, intense rehabilitative therapy could help the brain repair, leading to cognitive and functional recovery following a brain injury. This study not only found that rehabilitation following such an injury is vital, but also that longer and more intense periods of rehabilitation may produce greater benefits for a brain injury victim.

Numerous studies in the recent years have discovered that plasticity or ability for the adult central nervous system to recover from a TBI. And in answering their question on the best way to encourage repair and regrow damaged nerve cells and connections, researchers believe that a longer and more intense rehabilitation therapy is the best solution.

While these findings are still preliminary, it has implications for both medical practitioners and medical insurance companies. Currently, insurance companies only support brief periods of rehab. However, if the results of the study are utilized properly, insurance companies may have to pay for longer and more intensive rehab, promoting recovery and more function for TBI sufferers.

Whether a brain injury victim goes through the recommended rehabilitation this study suggests or one that his or her insurance covers, the recovery process for a TBI is no cakewalk. It is likely a lengthy process, causing emotional, mental and, even physical pain. Those suffering a brain injury in an accident should understand their legal options, which may lead to the recovery of compensation. This is critical as a personal injury claim could help a brain injury victim impose liability for injuries suffered and, hopefully, recover compensation damages arising from the incident.
