What driver errors lead to intersection crashes?

No matter where motorists are driving in West Virginia, they will need to cross through an intersection. Whether it is a major intersection or not, or if it is controlled by lights or signs, motorists need to be aware of the rules of the road as they relate to an intersection. Failure to comply with these laws could result in a serious car accident.

A recent study focused on the key contributors of driver errors resulting in intersection crashes. Uncovering the factors and errors of these collisions could help improve roadway safety and promote efforts to reduce these types of car accidents.

So, which driver errors lead to intersection crashes? In order to assess what factors are most likely to lead to these types of accidents, it is important to understand that there are three types of intersections. These include an uncontrolled intersection, a sign-controlled intersection, and a signal-controlled intersection.

Failing to properly yield was the most common problem, regardless of intersection type. However for sign-controlled intersections, inattentive driving was also a common cause of wrecks. For signal-controlled intersections, inattentive driving and following too close to other vehicles were common causes that came in behind failure to yield as leading causes of accidents.

Based on this study, negligent driving is the most likely cause of a car crash at an intersection. Therefore, accident prevention measures should be made to address this driver error at all types of intersections. While this could help reduce the number of collisions, it unfortunately will not prevent these types of crashes from occurring.

Following an intersection crash, it is essential to understand the cause and liability. If a negligent driver caused the crash, they could be held accountable through a personal injury claim. Additionally, injured accident victims could recover compensation through such an action, helping them address any financial burdens incurred from the incident.
