Worker killed in West Virginia mining accident

Certain industries in West Virginia pose increased risks for workers. The mining industry includes some occupations that are very dangerous and require specific training and safety equipment. Even with these safety measures, employees could be involved in a workplace accident. Accidents like this could result in serious injuries or even death. After such incidents occur, it is important that employers fully investigate the incident and take appropriate measures to similar occurrences and injuries from happening in the future.

A mining accident recently occurred at the Brody Mill located in Boone County. According to reports, the accident left at least one worker dead. The incident occurred around 10:30 p.m. when a collapse occurred. Emergency crews and a mine rescue team were called to the site. It is not clear at this time how many people were affected.

It was reported that in 2013, this mine received a total of 253 violations described as being significant and substantial. These violations occurred during their 12-month review that ended last August and indicated that the owners of the mine had serious disregard for the health and safety of the miners that worked at the mine.

When a serious or fatal work accident occurs, it is important that the event is fully investigated. This can help establish cause and liability. Loved ones of a deceased worker could receive the benefits of workers' compensation. This could provide them with a monetary award that would go towards funeral costs, damages and lost wages.

When an employer is negligent and fails to provide and safe work environment, those injured or killed on-the-job might have a cause of action. Those affected should seek guidance about their legal options, which could result in receiving compensation for their damages and losses.
