Two West Virginia motorcycle accidents occur within 24 hours

Although summer is coming to a close, residents of West Virginia will still see motorcyclist frequent the roads for a few more months. The recent holiday weekend not only saw more vehicles on the road, but residents witnessed motorcycle accidents occurring more frequently over a short span of time.

In less than 24 hours, West Virginia State Troopers were at the scene of two motorcycle accidents on U.S 50, between Augusta and Romney. The first motorcycle collision occurred when the driver lost control of his bike while traveling eastbound on the three-lane highway. Serious injuries resulted and the motorcyclist was transported to a nearby hospital. He did not survive the injuries he sustained. The exact cause of the accident is still under investigation.

The second accident occurred in the early afternoon and involved a dump truck. The motorcyclist and the dump truck were both traveling westbound. A witness stated that it looked like the dump truck was turning into a church while the motorcyclist was attempting to pass on the right hand side. The two vehicles collided, nearly destroying the bike. The motorcyclist did not survive the accident. The collision resulted in little damage to the dump truck and no injuries to the driver.

The recent fatal motorcycle accidents are still under investigation and the relatives of the deceased drivers are mourning their deaths. If negligence by other drivers was a factor, however, the motorcyclists might be able to recover their medical bills, funeral costs, lost wages and pain and suffering in a wrongful death suit. Those recoveries could help with the costs the families are enduring, but it would help with the mourning process.

Injuries and fatalities on motorcycles are very serious. The small size of the vehicle cannot usually hold up against other vehicles, which are often much larger in size. It might also be challenging for drivers to spot a nearby motorcycle because of their small size. It is important for drivers of all vehicles and motorcycles to check blind spots, signal turns and watch speeds.
