Investigation of officer killed by negligent driver is ongoing

It is not uncommon to hear about tragic car accidents on the news, but when the news delivers a story about an officer being killed while assisting a motorist on the side of the road; it sends shocks and concerns throughout the nation.

In the late hours on Interstate 77, a West Virginia safety patrol officer was assisting a stranded motorist on the road side. At around 2:00 a.m., the patrol officer was struck by a passing vehicle. The investigation is ongoing, but the West Virginia State Police allege that the preliminary investigation indicates that the driver of the vehicle that struck the patrol officer may have fallen asleep at the wheel.

There is a growing public concern that late night drivers are driving tired in order to make it to their destinations. Driving while tired is not only dangerous for the driver but for the other vehicles. Falling asleep at the wheel not only increases the dangers for the driver but puts other drivers and any passengers in the vehicles in danger as well. It also increases the likelihood of collisions.

Negligent driving can cause various types of accidents on a variety of vehicles. Common accidents include hit-and-runs, rear-end collisions, bicycle accidents, drunk driving, auto defects and other fatal car crashes. A careless driver may also cause damage in motorcycle, boating and even ATV accidents.

Family members should keep in mind that they may be able to pursue a wrongful death action if a loved one is killed by a negligent driver. The suit would be used to recover compensation for medical expenses, funeral expenses, lost wages and pain and suffering.
