Attorney Stephen New: Giving Back to the Community
I am Stephen New, and I am a life-long resident of West Virginia. I grew up in Gilbert, the son of a coal miner and a teacher. I earned my bachelor's degree from Marshall University in 1994 and my law degree from the West Virginia University College of Law in 1998.
In 2005, I started a philanthropy project that provides children with bicycle helmets. To date, I have given away thousands of helmets. It gives me great personal and professional satisfaction to give back to the community in a way that keeps children safe.
Bicycle Helmets for Children
There is a law in West Virginia that requires children under the age of 14 to wear a bike helmet. Parents whose children do not wear a helmet can be held legally responsible.
As a personal injury attorney, I know how important it is for children to wear bike helmets. Not all families have the financial resources necessary to purchase bike helmets. And not all families are aware of West Virginia's law applying to bicycle helmet use.
As a concerned citizen and lawyer, I have made it a mission to help keep our kids safe on the road. Since 2005, I have given away hundreds of bicycle helmets to children in Beckley, Raleigh County, and throughout West Virginia. I have donated helmets to Mac's Toy Fund, Kids Count, and other local charities. I am proud to contribute to making West Virginia a better and safer place to live.
